It is a simple and easy confectionary sweet recipe made with lotus seeds or fox nuts. Lotus seeds popularly known as makhana are a popular religious and culturally significant ingredient in Indian cuisine. In addition, it is also considered as an auspicious ingredient according to the Hindu religion and hence used significantly in rituals and celebrations feasts. Makhana ki barfi Popularly known as Makhana Katli is one such easy and simple sweet recipe. There are myriad ways to make this simple sweet, but mixing it with milk powder, powdered cashew nuts, and sugar is the simple and popular way. The other common way is to make sugar syrup with a 1-string consistency. This would make it more visible and attractive but can be tricky. The other easy way is to make it with condensed milk, but can be challenging to shape it.

Ingredients

  • 2 cup makhana
  • ½ cup cashew
  • ½ cup milk powder
  • ½ cup desiccated coconut
  • ½ tsp cardamom powder
  • 2 cup milk
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • silver vark (for garnishing)

Instructions

  1. Firstly, dry roast 2 cup makhana on low flame until it turns crunchy.
  2. Make sure to pop and check if makhana is crunchy.
  3. Cool completely, and transfer to the mixer jar. Also, add ½ cup cashew.
  4. Pulse and grind to a fine powder.
  5. Transfer the powder to a large bowl.
  6. Add ½ cup milk powder, ½ cup desiccated coconut, and ½ tsp cardamom powder.
  7. Mix well making sure everything is well combined. Keep aside.
  8. In a large kadai take 2 cup milk and ¾ cup sugar.
  9. Stir and dissolve the sugar completely.
  10. Now add prepared makhana mixture and mix well.
  11. Mix well making sure the mixture everything is well combined and the mixture thickens.
  12. Once the mixture starts to thicken, add 1 tsp ghee and mix well.
  13. Keep mixing until the mixture starts to separate the pan and holds the shape.
  14. Transfer the mixture onto the butter paper. make sure to grease the butter paper with ghee.
  15. Start to knead the dough by pressing to form a soft dough.
  16. Place the makhana dough between butter paper and roll using a rolling pin.
  17. Roll slightly thick making sure it’s uniform.
  18. Now grease with ghee and apply silver leaf or silver vark. Applying vark is optional.
  19. Now cut into a diamond shape or shape of your choice.
  20. Finally, enjoy Makhana Sweet Recipe for a week when stored in an airtight container.

Notes

  • Firstly, make sure to roast the makhana, else it will not turn crunchy and tasty.
  • Also, adding cashew and milk powder gives a nice richness to the mithai.
  • Additionally, you can set the mixture into a pan and cut it into a burfi shape.
  • finally, Makhana Sweet Recipe tastes great when a tsp of ghee is added.
